8 Weeks Vacation A Year!

Matthew Yglesias thinks that Finland "may have taken things too far" in legislating a whopping 39 days of mandatory vacation time per year for its workers. I say, by what standard? Finland's GDP grew by 5.5% last year, compared to our own modest 3.4%. They seem to be doing just fine.

Don't you understand, Paul, that countries like Finland propser because they're not burdoned with lazy brown immigrants! When was the last time you saw a Mexican American actually working for a living?!

I have a weird weakness for Milton Friedman and beg you to indulge me. Quoting from O'Rourke's Eat the Rich:

"A Scandinavian economist once proudly said to free-market advocate Milton Friedman,'In Scandinavia we have no poverty.' And Milton Friedman replied, 'That's interesting, because in America among Scandinavians, we have no poverty, either.'"

Good for Finland! Heaven knows that if I had 8 weeks of vacation I'd spend a whole lot more time doing nothing!
